The Complete Cyprus Car Trip: A Little Look at Limassol

The coast at Kourion Beach

On New Year’s Day we took a leisurely drive from Nicosia to Limassol. Since the weather had been fine we decided to go towards the mountains and visit one of the Byzantine painted churches in the Troodos region. While the drive was fine, unfortunately the Church of Ayia Sotira (of the Transfiguration of the Savior) was closed. It had very limited opening hours – only a couple days a week for 2 hours at a time. From the outside the church wasn’t anything special, but the views on the drive made up for it. We arrived in Limassol during a huge rainstorm that lasted all night, so we didn’t see much of the town centre until later in our trip.

Kourion Archeologcial Site

The next day we spent the day at the Kourion archeological site just outside of Limassol. We really enjoyed our time here. The site is quite extensive and there were several ruins that were in ‘good condition’. The mosaics weren’t as many or in as good condition as those in the Paphos Archaeological site, but there are still worth the visit. My daughter had fun walking around the ruins and being outdoors. We ended our visit eating lunch down on the beach at Chris Blue Beach Restaurant – delicious fish, good wine and nice views of the sea!Kourion mosaics

That evening we wandered around the new very modern marina in Limassol enjoying our frappé coffees while our daughter played on the playgrounds along the boardwalk. Then it started to rain again, so we were back at the apartment for dinner.

The next morning you would have never imagined that it rained the night before. There was a bright blue sky and lots of sun. We walked around the small pedestrian city centre. We passed by the Limassol Castle. It houses an archeology museum, but after Nicosia we didn’t want to subject our 2 year old to more museums, so we didn’t go inside. Instead we enjoyed the Limassol boardwalk a little bit more before heading off for the mountains.

Limassol Boardwalk

Our visit to Limassol was quite short and was made even shorter due to the fact that it rained in the evenings. However, we saw most of the things we wanted to see and for everything else there is always next time…
